Some visitors note that peak times can lead to crowded conditions, making it more challenging to find a seat especially on busy Saturdays. A few diners express that, during rush hours, service may slow down slightly despite the staff remaining friendly. While the pub offers a varied menu, there are occasional requests for more vegetarian options. The absence of notable dessert options beyond the popular apple pie leaves some guests hoping for broader choices. A handful mention that the atmosphere can occasionally get too lively for a quiet dinner, especially during live music events. However, the energy can also be a draw if one enjoys an active social setting.
Great little pub very friendly staff and very helpful and welcoming. Great choice of drinks. Cheese Marconi was a good sized portion, the chips where fab. The cornbeef pie was filled to the brim of cornbeef and potato. Mushy peas where full of flavour. Steak and ale pie was full of steak and was amazing. All 4 of us gave it 5 stars. Couldn't complain about anything. It was nice and hot and generous portions all round. Definitely recommend this place for a meal. Nice open fireplace and a very traditional pub.
Excellent Sunday dinner, couldn't fault it! Very friendly and welcoming staff. Will definitely go again.
A super old pub retains lots of character. Once owned by the awful Scottish and Newcastle brewery. A Top pub, not a Low pub! Five real ales. Alic chose local N Shields brewery Three Kings. A good Pale Ale. Been to South Shields hundreds of times but only second visit to the North side. Booth loves this bar. Retains original character and serves super pies.
Fantastic Sunday meal! I went with the chicken and stuffing, smaller portion, and was still provided a very generous portion. All food served hot, quickly and by very accommodating staff. This was a great meal.
'went here to celebrate the 43rd anniversary of my 21st birthday last week. Many folks rave about the pies but I would like to rave about a different kind: the apple pie dessert - blinking marvellous. Jam packed solid to lid with chunky bits of apple. I think this is by far the best apple pie I have had in a pub or restaurant for decades. As for the service, ambience and everything else - top drawer. I have pooch and he was very much welcomed. Full range of brilliantly kept ales and all very friendly. I normally cant be bothered to write reviews but this is one of best pubs in the region without a doubt.
The pub on entry was bar to the right, more of a dining area to the left. We were greeted by a lovely lady who gave us a menu and took our drinks order, after a little while a gentlemen took our food order. The dining room is very well decorated and has a beautiful log fire. It wasn't long before the food came, and it did not disappoint ... the pie was beautifully cooked inside and out the mash was not my cup of tea but my partner liked it my mushy peas were what i can only describe as a childhood moment they were amazing and tasted how peas should unlike the watered down ones sold everywhere else. My gravy was lovely and thick. My partners cod was cooked so well it melted in your mouth. The chips are definitely the better option and are cooked so well!!! It's definitely worth the money. 100% recommended for anyone passing or local.
Was in North Shields to catch a ferry, so popped in here to pass some time. Fantastic pub, staff are lovely and welcoming, also very enthusiastic when you ask them questions about the locally brewed beers on tap, which are also superb. My wife ordered a coffee which she enjoyed. One of the beer taps is an actual BRIT Award which was won by their local lad, Sam Fender. I'd imagine that's quite a pull for tourists. Sadly we weren't hungry at the time of our visit, so didn't get to try the food, but throughout the afternoon they had to start operating a waiting list for dining, so it must be good.
